China’s Great Firewall and internal controls on internet use and technology have forked what was a worldwide web, as Josh Meltzer and David Dollar describe. Going ahead, upholding freedom of data means ensuring that this forking doesn’t finish in broader fragmentation. Put in a unique way, the massive problem with Chinese technology exports is the downward strain it locations on democratic ideas like transparency and accountability, significantly in relation to the governance of surveillance technologies like facial recognition.
