CANCAN Furnishings has expanded its flagship operations at Tan Boon Liat Building to a combined 7,000 square feet across two levels. The new flagship studio at 315 Outram Road now spans a 3,000-square-foot space on Level 11 and a newly opened 4,000-square-foot studio on Level 13. The design team from Right Angle Studio aimed to slow the visitor’s pace from the moment they step inside. Instead of a typical showroom with products laid out in rows, the entrance narrows into a dark, quiet tunnel-like atmosphere. This design forces visitors to focus inward before the furniture fully comes into view.
A Journey Through Home
Co-founder Daniel Mok believes furniture shopping should not be rushed. He stated, “We live in a world where almost everything is experienced quickly. Furniture shouldn’t be.” The studio is not a grid of sofas and tables but rather complete residential settings, including living, dining, and lounging environments. Fellow co-founder Will Zhang and Right Angle Studio curated these displays to bring furniture, rugs, lighting, and artwork into harmony. The brand focuses on the belief behind its name: that a home should not be constrained by standardised furniture.
The pacing of the space is deliberate. The team used subtle visual boundaries to suggest lounge and dining areas without enclosing them in walls. Structural columns have been turned into slots of light. The settings draw on “carefully balanced contrasts between rough and refined textures, light and dark tones,” with soft curves set against clean architectural lines. The scale of the settings varies on purpose. Some configurations cater to grander houses, while others are tailored for compact flats. This allows the collection to complement a diverse array of spatial footprints.
Beyond the Showroom
While the spaces on Level 11 and Level 13 express different moods, they share the same design philosophy. They use varied stones, finishes, and lighting to show the versatility of the collection. According to Daniel Mok, “Designing a home is rarely completed in one visit, and we’ve intentionally created spaces that reward people each time they come back.”
