Major Renovation Underway on Carlsbad Tri-Level Home

A 1960s tri-level home in Carlsbad, California, has undergone a major renovation, transforming it into a unique and functional beachside bungalow. The house, located just a mile from the Pacific, is situated in a neighborhood known as “olde Carlsbad,” which offers great proximity to local schools and a short bike ride or golf cart ride to Carlsbad Village’s shops and restaurants.

Designer Leigh Jendrusina, founder of SALTHOUSE Collective, led the renovation project. She lives in the neighborhood and has watched the area evolve, with younger families moving in and reviving older homes into cooler, unique spaces.

The Renovation Process

The clients, a young family with three kids under the age of five, had been living in the area for about two years. They wanted a home that felt special and unique, with a functional kitchen and primary bathroom. Leigh took a looser approach to the design, channeling the unfussy character of a beach shack rather than obvious coastal motifs.

The house was taken down to the studs, and Leigh reconfigured the layout to better suit the family’s needs. Custom wall-to-wall closets were added for storage, and built-in laundry on the upper level streamlined the family’s routine. Flooring was replaced throughout, and vertical tongue-and-groove paneling was installed on the first level to bring architectural character to two walls.

The project kicked off at the end of December and wrapped up in March.

Leigh’s design approach focused on creating a “collected-cool” vibe, with bits of color, patterns, and textures in each space. The result is a warm and layered feel that is interesting but not overwhelming.
