Nicole Kidman provided the opening narration at Chanel’s Spring 2027 presentation in Paris’s Grand Palais, delivering Virginia Woolf’s Orlando passage through the venue’s sound system. The excerpt—”What’s life, we ask, leaning on the farmyard gate; Life, Life, Life! cries the bird, as if he had heard, and knew precisely, what we meant by this bothering prying habit of ours of asking questions…”, mirrored the show’s central theme as artistic director Matthieu Blazy invited viewers to examine their surroundings, particularly the sky.

Avian Themes

Above Dua Lipa and Pedro Pascal among other guests, oversized avian figures dominated the scene, some resembling gulls with luminous orange beaks, others suspended in flight. Since assuming his role at Chanel in April 2025, Blazy has reimagined the brand’s heritage with modern perspectives. Previous productions included a whimsical garden for Fall 2026 Haute Couture and a fantasy mushroom forest for Spring-Summer 2026. This time, he collaborated with scenographer Richard Peduzzi to emphasize bird symbolism.

The Show’s Design

A swarm of 95 birds, crafted from wood and translucent paper, filled the Grand Palais ceiling, evoking themes of migration. Their varied forms drew from multiple species, while the stage floor featured resin artwork resembling abstract water patterns. Reflections of the illuminated birds shimmered across the polished surface as Kidman’s narration transitioned into Tchaikovsky’s Valse Sentimentale. Models then showcased the collection, titled La Conversation, Part Three, Different Faces of the Same Coin, which spotlighted Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s life and history, from her early career as a seamstress through to her fashion world success.

In the show notes, Blazy stated, “It’s about one woman, Gabrielle, who then became Chanel.”

Liberty in Fashion

Blazy debuted lighter, movement-friendly variations on the classic Chanel tweed suit, including “smocked tweed,” as the fashion house referred to it in the show notes, a new version of a classic made more malleable and comfortable for the modern woman. It’s a design that draws from both Coco and the brand’s heritage and from 2026. Much like the flocks of birds soaring overhead, Blazy presents a vision of joyous freedom. In the show notes, he added, “It’s a collection about Gabrielle Chanel’s layered stories. Ultimately, Chanel took off, and each step she took led to her being free, like a bird.”
