The new film version of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility brings the Dashwood sisters’ story to life, featuring their move from the grand family estate, Norland Park, to Barton Cottage, a small house in Devon. Daisy Edgar-Jones, who stars as Elinor in the adaptation, enjoyed working within the film’s detailed sets, which were carefully designed to recreate the era.

Edgar-Jones was asked about her favorite Dashwood house, and she revealed that while she loves Barton Cottage, she would probably want to live in Norland, due to its beauty and accessibility. She also mentioned that if she could live in any historic or famous house, it would be Hogwarts, a place she finds fascinating.

When it comes to her own decorating style, Edgar-Jones said it leans more towards simplicity and practicality, as she loves decorative items like pillows, ribbons, and lace. She also stated that if she could take one thing from the Sense and Sensibility set, it would be Marianne’s pianoforte, as it can make a room feel cozy and inviting.

The Dashwood family’s transition from Norland to Barton Cottage is a key part of the novel. Edgar-Jones shared that her biggest move was when she was 22 and moved into a flat on her own, which was the first time she discovered her style and interior aesthetic. This experience was significant, as it was the first time she had a space that was completely hers, allowing her to express her personal taste.

Edgar-Jones’s experience with the film’s sets and her own decorating style offer a glimpse into the world of Sense and Sensibility. The film’s attention to detail in its interiors is evident, with vintage items and gorgeous furniture sourced for the production. The pianoforte, in particular, holds a special appeal, as it can add a touch of warmth and personality to a room, making it feel lived in and comfortable.

As she reflected on her time working on the film, Edgar-Jones noted that the sets played a key role in bringing the story to life. The production team’s efforts to recreate the era’s interiors paid off, resulting in a visually stunning film that transports viewers to another time. The Dashwood sisters’ story, with its themes of love, loss, and resilience, continues to captivate audiences, and the new film adaptation is a sign of the enduring power of Austen’s novel.
