Pistachio Palette Brings Harmony to Seattle Kitchen

Home design often leans on color trends, but a pistachio-inspired palette brings harmony to this Seattle kitchen through a more personal connection to heritage. The interior design firm Notherworld Projects designed the space for a couple of Iranian and Filipino descent, using the nuts and dates they shared during their first meeting as the foundation for the remodel. The wife’s father once owned a pistachio farm in Iran, a detail that grounded the project in family history. At their initial consultation, the clients set out pistachios and dates, both items used to welcome guests in their respective families. The designer noted that the colors of the nuts and the shells—sage, pistachio, and burgundy—became the chromatic foundation of the renovation.

The project had a functional beginning that differed from the final aesthetic. The original kitchen was choppy and dark, divided by archways and complicated by an obsolete fireplace stack. The cabinets wouldn’t stay closed and the drawers stuck shut, creating a frustrating environment for a couple who frequently entertains and cooks. The homeowners requested strategic storage and display opportunities to keep the compact space from feeling overly filled with cabinetry. They wanted to open up the areas to facilitate better entertaining with family and friends. Notherworld Projects achieved this by removing the archways and the old fireplace stack to create a more fluid layout.

Custom walnut cabinetry with beveled door details anchors the room. The beverage station features curved storage, and the countertops are crafted from rare Breccia Capraia marble. This stone has purple veining that complements a checkerboard-inspired floor made of aubergine and pink tiles. A soft green backsplash above the range echoes the pistachio-inspired palette and brings the color story full circle. Open shelving between the kitchen and living room maintains a visual connection and provides a practical place to pass dishes or display cherished objects. The designer worked with a talented woodworker to resolve the transitions between wood, stone, tile, and cabinetry, ensuring each material met the next with care. The project took approximately six months to complete.

For the people living in the house, this renovation means the difference between a room that feels like a series of separate functions and a home that feels like a unified whole. In a compact urban setting, successfully merging cooking, dining, and social areas into a single, cohesive flow is essential for daily comfort. The result is a space that balances the need for practical storage with the desire for an open, expressive atmosphere.
