Casework’s design for a Neo Italianate Kitchen is a finalist in the 8th annual GRAY Awards in the Kitchen category. The project is a renovation of an 1884 Italianate home, inspired by the spirit of Mexico City and the legacy of architect Luis Barragán.

The clients, who are new to Portland by way of Brooklyn with roots in France, wanted to update their home’s kitchen while maintaining its Italianate essence. They were inspired by a guided tour of Gilardi House in Mexico City, which was led by the son of the original homeowner.

The design team drew inspiration from the home’s original decorative detailing, including the walnut shelving at the bar. They also emphasized the vertical proportions of the space, a characteristic of Italianate homes, by eliminating upper cabinets and opting for open shelving.

The kitchen features a striking black-and-white marble checkerboard floor, which serves as a bold anchor for the monochromatic palette. The custom green cabinetry features integrated brass green pulls, adding a touch of modernity to the space.

The soapstone counter and backsplash were selected for their durability and value, and also serve as a classic element to the design. The design team also made adjustments to the space to accommodate the clients’ needs, including a taller island and a range hood with curved edges.
